Like for many readers of the book, it hit way too close to home for me. Even though it was dated by the time I read it, the problems were problems I dealt with regularly at my last job. (It even started with a failure to run payroll, and I worked on a payroll product!). The points made felt very salient.
Crazy that I didn’t even know the meaning of the word devops before this. Historically, development and operations were done separately. Devops is the idea that they are done together. Not through this book, but I also only recently learned the origin of CI (continuous integration). Historically, components were developed independently, then fit together during an integration phase. CI means components are tested together after every change (continuously).
Really cool concept for a technical book about ways of working. Instead of non-fiction declarative statements, it tells a story with characters, conflict and action. By the end, you intuitively feel why the problems are problems and why the solutions are the solutions. It was easy for me to get through on auidobook because of the narrative style.
I wish I read this years ago.
