A scattershot of ideas from the makers of the 10,000 year clock. Not coherent when you read it through, but if skim random pages, you’re likely to find random food for thought.

My number one favorite idea from the book: most resilient systems have a mix of fast and slow components. Fast learns. Slow remembers. In a forest, leaves live for a year, tree crown grows slower, trees slower, forest patch slower, biome slower. Competition between trees at one level serves a slower level (resulting in a strong forest). You might also apply this to your daily life. Each day involves countless tiny interactions, insights, experiments, etc. They all feed into your long-term goals, skills, and values. Those slow-changing things in turn shape your daily behavior. Rapid iteration and slow reflection shaping each other.

Another fun idea: Software is both horribly short lived and horrifically long lived. Software is constantly being deprecated and abandoned. And yet legacy systems seem to be immortal.
