Simple, contrarian idea: don’t follow your passion.
You need to be good at something to expect a good job.
Passion is an epiphenomenon of a life well lived.
Autonomy, belonging and competence all predict job satisfaction, and all are increased by spending more time in your job and working hard to become better at your job.
Don’t ask what your job can do for you. Ask what you can do for your job.
Don’t start over from scratch in a new field. I almost made this mistake. I wanted to leave my software developer job to get a master’s in chemical engineering and design batteries. That would have wasted all my career capital.
Do what people are willing to pay for. So simple and I love it. And all the stories about “do what you love” bloggers who write about how to money blogging, but don’t make money doing it.
