This has got to be one of my favorite books of all time (I really love hard sci-fi). The first line of the book is “The moon blew up without warning and for no apparent reason.” What follows is an uncannily believable what-if scenario played out in its entirety. After the first two thirds or so, it jumps forward 5000 years, and you get to see all the long-term implications of the events in the beginning. The pacing is incredibly well done for the first two thirds; I did NOT want to put it down. Things suddenly slow down after the flash forward, and it builds back up to a pretty good ending. It could easily be two or three books, but the author did what you often wish authors would do and wrote it all at once as a cohesive whole.
